2018 Annual Awards Banquet
WHERE: Brookland Banquet & Convention Center, West Columbia

View Details

The LCSF began in 1998 and we recognized our 20th anniversary at the annual awards banquet last year. The first awards banquet was held in 1999. The impetus for the creation of the LCSF was the difficult budget times in the late 1990s. During this period, the LCSD’s budget was not being fully funded and the department was struggling financially. Two Lexington County residents, Scott Malyerck and Rick Daniel (now deceased) had attended a session of the LCSD’s Citizen’s Academy and were so impressed by the work of the department that they wanted to do something to show their appreciation for the department. They approached the Sheriff and presented the idea of a fundraising foundation for the department. The Sheriff was receptive to the idea and the LCSF was created. Scott reached out to community leaders looking for support for the foundation. Robin Brown had attended the Citizens Academy session after Scott, Rick and Robin was also interested in being more involved with the department and joined Scott and Rick on the board. We began fundraising activities and worked to get all of the necessary paperwork filed for our 501c(3) status. Fundraising over the years has included the annual awards banquets, golf tournaments, the Jailbreak 5K, the Jailbreak Escape challenge run, the clay shoot tournament, memberships and grants. The foundation has provided equipment like ASP batons, back-up weapons, uniform boots, ear pieces, and gloves for officers as well as items like televisions and refrigerators for various units. The foundation has also provided several K9s for the department. LCSF has facilitated donations of major items like a boat for the marine unit and supports the different specialized units like the Marine Patrol, SWAT team, Bike Patrol , Dive Team, Explorer Post and others in their individual fundraising activities. In addition, through the years the foundation has provided training materials and has funded attendance to a number of training classes.
